Episode 71 – If you want to talk about VitaTV and Ubisoft turn to Episode 71

Every choice is great!

What happened this week!? The VitaTV comes out of nowhere, Ubisoft reveals a bunch of amazing looking games, there are quality crowd sourced games everywhere, minecraft clones excel beyond simple comparisons, heaps of kickstarted projects were released. James played Godus and Paul went camping all while Ben is still on the first boss of Diablo 3.  How do we fit it all in? We just talk for longer.

How Crowd Funding Solved Virtual Reality

VR

In March 2012 the world got its first look at the Oculus Rift.  This virtual reality display was accurate, low cost and had the potential to become a serious option for the home virtual reality industry.  Other than the impressive tech the difference with this attempt was that to fund the project they used crowd funding via a Kickstarter campaign.  This not only helped them raise 2.5 million dollars but made the Rift a recognisable name among gaming enthusiasts overnight.

While we await the consumer launch of the product we have be inundated with support from developers experimenting with the interface and pledging that their titles will be compatible. For the first time VR looks like it has a real chance at taking off with quality hardware and software support but since then we’ve seen other players enter the scene that fill in other parts of the VR experience and yet again crowd funding seems to be a key component.

Your Kickstarter Sucks

Kickstarter and other crowd funding sites such as indiegogo are rapidly changing the landscape of gaming. As Triple A development slips, small development teams with low budget, niche projects are starting to gain more attention and often find success with crowd funding.  Many players view crowd funding as easy, risk-free money, but for developers it can be an emotional rollercoaster where they’ve bet their very livelihood on the public’s generosity.

We, the gaming public have the power. We shall decide who will survive to code another day and who will have to take that internship with Oracle after all.
